Naresh Iyer
03.23.06 (10:12 am)   [edit]

Been reading for some days about Naresh Iyer on the web and on numerous blogs. Although I did watch V channel Super Singer last year, I never got to see Naresh cos I started watching the show when the 6 finalists were shortlisted and from there on.

Naresh has been making waves for sometime esp after the music of Rang De Basanti came out and his Paatshaala, Roobaroo, and Tu Bin Bataye became popular. I, like every other music aficionado, started searching for other songs sung by this guy, and came across some Tamil albums namely Ah Aah, GodFather and Saravanaa. Listened to those songs, but this one song struck me like none other (the rest really didn't have the AR touch, but then I assume that I probably have to listen to them properly to let them grow on me). The song I got  hooked onto is Mayilirage from Ah Aah, sung by Madhushree and Naresh Iyer. The song is quite a piece, with wonderful thavil beats, that probably only AR Rahman can mix like this in this day of music :). I know nothing of Tamil actually (I can understand some words but I've never really been able to converse in the language/understand the song meanings - hey, btw if someone knows the meaning of this song or can translate it for me, I will be obliged to you :) ) but even I found Madhushree's pronunciation totally irritating. Tamil songs are usually free flowing, and Madhushree stutters across each word and the lyrics sound totally wierd when she sings the song. I love her voice though, so maybe I could bear with it.

Naresh Iyer in this song is radical. Listen to this part which he sings somewhere in the middle of the song (I took the lyrics from another blog :) so don't blame me if some parts of it r wrong - I anyway did make a few changes based on my hearing) My heart skips several beats when I listen to his voice here, I visualize wisps of feathers floating around and I feel those tugs and thumps of love deep inside me ...

uyirai thodanga varum
nee dhaane mei ezhuthu
naan podum kai ezhuthu anbae
ulagam mozhiyil varum ellame naer ezhuthu
kaadhal dhaan kal aRithu anbae

This guys voice is made for soft numbers. His voice in Tu Bin Bataye in Rang De Basanti is also amazing, esp. when he sings

mann ki gali tu phuhaaron si aa
bheeg jaye mere khwabon ka kafila
jise tu gungunaye meri dhun hai wahin
tu bin bataye mujhe le chal kaheen
jahan tu muskuraye meri manzil wahin

(Now these lyrics I can understand ;) ) Hearing him is like the feeling you get when tiny silvery snow flakes touch your face... his pronunciation, and the way his breath echoes some parts of the words; I'm totally hooked. I have heard some of the fast and peppy numbers he's sung and I think he's done a really good job, but with these two songs, he's the one new singer I'm really looking forward to hear more of.

Rahman has this penchant of picking up really class stuff out of the masses, and Karthik and Naresh are two of the real gems he's picked up in recent times. I have heard people say Naresh sounds like Karthik, but for me they belong to two totally different genres. Naresh's voice has a rough edge which is totally intriguing (listen to Roobaroo to get my point), while Karthik for me is trained and soulful, controlled yet free-flow (listen to Oru Maalai from Ghajini, Kiru Kiru from Kaadhal and Ale Ale from Boys).

Well, thumbs up to more music from these two new guys, and to Rahman for discovering them!

Yes Naresh Iyer is Rahman's favourite these days (he always had a favourite singer at any given point of time) and he has the potential to go places with his sooooooothing voice. And the best advantage is that he can sing in hindi and all his three songs are hits. So in the coming days there is no doubt that there will be more Naresh Iyer songs in hindi and tamil. And yes Kartik is another discovery from Rahman who is again one of my favourites. I really liked his rendition of the Malayalam song "Akale Akale" from the movie "Akale".

You made me to listen to the song from Ah...Ah and to my shock the girl really kills Tamil with her very good voice.
I cite those lines but corrected:
"uyirai thodarnthu varum
nee dhaane mei ezhuthu
naan podum kai ezhuthu anbae
ulagam mozhiyil varum ellame neer ezhuthu
kaadhal dhaan kal ezhuthu anbae"

Before we go to the meaning, it is good to know that Tamil has two sets of letters.
1. Uyir ezhuthu - the soul letters e.g. "Ah", "Oh"
2. Mei ezhuthu - the body letters e.g. "Mm"
The combinations of these letters make a sound e.g. "Am", "Ohm". In these body is attached in the end of the soul and not the other way.

Now to the meaning:
"uyirai thodarnthu varum nee dhaane mei ezhuthu naan podum kai ezhuthu anbae"
-- You are the body that follows my soul.
"ulagam mozhiyil varum ellame neer ezhuthu
kaadhal dhaan kal ezhuthu anbae"
-- All the words in world languages are liquid like water, but Love is solid, strong and permanent like a stone.

naresh is the new find by rahman.ok,agreed.but there is a very long journey for him ahead to prove himself.pls, dont overrate & over hype him.there are more better singers who are struggling to come up.why cant a.r.rahman,annu mallik, himesh reshammiya, pritam, vishal&shekar, etc give a break to them.

You are absolutely right Aarti. But i dont think there is anything wrong in saying something good about someone whose is worth the compliments. All due respect to other upcoming singers. We never said Naresh Iyer is the best singer in this world.

hi
you are all right. there is nothing wrong in appreciating anybody's voice and the way the singer sings. this is a compliment and encourages him to give more best songs. Yes Naresh iyer is really very good, the way he sang himagiri thaneya in the super singer contest which impressed ARR, was too good. this is not overrating or over hype. he is very dedicated to music and has learnt carnatic and hindustani, have always won prizes in all his intercollegiate competitions. He will definitely prove one day that he is one of the best singers. Per haps you have not heard him singing BREATHLESS song, originally sung by Shankar Mahadevan. I have attended his live shows, and he sings this braathless so beautifully and is appreciated and applauded with once more everytime. JUST LISTEN TO INNISAI SONG FROM GODFATHER, LISTEN AND LISTEN THEN ONLY YOU WILL FEEL. HE IS JUST SUPERB. HIS VOICE REALLY MELTS LIKE ICECREAM. He will never get hyped and his down to earth person, with no style.

Aarti, I understand that Naresh has a long way ahead of him, but he is one of the new singers that you think must be promoted and I think A R is doing a good job by doing just that. I think he has a good potential, and hv been hearing more songs of his that hv been confirming that he's a good find! As for other singers who're struggling to come up, I guess if they've got talent and are in the right place at the right time, they'll all get their place in the sun! :)

Yes friends, Naresh is tamil iyer boy from Matunga, Mumbai, India. His voice is really great. I am his fan no doubt. have you all heard him in kadhal suttude from saravanaa and also kamma karayil, a very different song, he understands the meaning of the word, so he could sing very well. wait for his songs in JIL ENDRU ORU KADHAL and other films. He must have sang atleast 200 times the BREATHLESS SONG, originally sung by SHANKAR MAHADEVAN, i heard him in a show when they announced that SHANKAR MAHADEVAN TOOK 32 TAKES TO COMPLETE THIS SONG BUT NARESH IYER SINGS IN ONE TAKE. DO NOT MISS ANY OF HIS SHOWS.
